Hello, and welcome to Gluten-Free Shanti! I hope you’ll continue to return as I document my triumphs and failures in navigating a gluten-free lifestyle.
I have been loosely gluten-free for about a year, moving to a strictly gluten-free diet 6 weeks ago. My health has improved significantly in that time, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t crave a normal donut every day of the week. I have to think this sort of diet is much easier if you’ve been on it your whole life – you have no way of knowing what you’re missing! Regardless, whether you are gluten-free by choice or by necessity, I think we can all agree that this kind of change in lifestyle requires a lot of learning. Rather than try everything on your own, I’ll save you some work by sharing what works for me and what definitely does not.
You might also be wondering why “shanti” is included in the name of this blog. “Shanti” is the Sanskrit word for “peace,” and is a centerpiece of yogic practice. Throughout the last year, I have incorporated yoga into my life for both my physical and psychological health. My downward-facing dog might be the ugliest rendition you’ve ever seen, but that doesn’t keep me from getting back on the mat. Yoga is a continual learning process, and I want to share those lessons with you as well.
